Apple event results
Big day in the Apple camp today, new iPods, new iTunes, Starbucks and the iPhone is getting a $200 price cut in the States. That won’t go over well with all the people who shelled out $200 less than 3 months ago.
iPod Shuffle
First up were the iPods. The iPod shuffle remained the same design and capacity but gained some new colours, most notably a Product Red version. Apart from that there’s now silver, green, turquoise and purple. They aren’t as pretty as the old colours in my opinion. Except for the red of course.
iPod Nano
The iPod Nano was next and it received a large makeover. Now looking like a squished, fat iPod video, the Nano also now supports video on it’s 2 inch screen. I thought watching video on the iPod videos miniscule 3 inch screen was ridiculous, I can’t even imagine what it’s like on this thing. Apart from the redesign the Nano also now sports (as do all the other iPods with screen) a new interface featuring coverflow. About the only part of it I actually like. The colours are silver, blue, pink, green and black and you can get either 4 or 8GB of space.
iPod Classic
Next up was the iPod, no sorry, the iPod Classic. Yes the iPod video has been renamed the iPod classic and is redesigned as a larger version of the iPod Nano redesign. It also gained the same interface upgrade but it also gained a capacity upgrade. The low-end model is now 80GB and the high-end is a whopping 160GB. That’s pretty impressive. Available in Black and Silver.
iPod Touch
Next up came the two biggest announcements of the Event. First was the iPod Touch. An iPhone without the phone basically. It’s an iPod with multi touch capabilities, the same UI as the iPhone and features Wi-fi and web browsing via Safari. It also does video and comes in either 4 or 8GB configurations. Looks pretty impressive. I’m quite keen to check one of these out in the Apple Store. So what is the point of having an iPod with Wi-fi?
iTunes Mobile Store
Enter iTunes Mobile Store. If you are out and about at a wi-fi hotspot then you can browse the iTunes Store via Wi-fi and download songs straight to your iPod. Pretty sweet. Apple has also teamed up with Starbucks so that when you walk into a Starbucks with the iPod Touch (or a Mac or PC) you can look to see what song is currently playing and if you like it you can buy and download there and then.
iPhone ringtones and price cut
Lastly was the two iPhone announcements. First was the iPhone ringtones. So you paid $0.99 to download a song you can listen to over and over? Now pay another $0.99 and you can have it as a ringtone! Ridiculous Apple. The other iPhone announcement is sure to cause a stir too, $200 pricecut. There’s now no 4GB iPhone and the 8GB model is now only $399. The people who paid $200 less than 3 months ago have gotta be pretty livid.
So that was the Apple event in all it’s glory. I came, I saw, I wanted, I got over. Life goes on.
