Numbers, numbers, numbers
Some interesting numbers come out of this Kotaku article, mainly that the Wii is selling like hotcakes while the PS3 is lagging just a little bit behind. In 2007 the Wii sold over six million consoles while the PS3 sold just two and a half million, the 360 is lodged in the middle with four and a half million. Even the PS2 managed to sell more than the PS3, but that’s actually a positive thing for Sony as when you look at the lifetime sales for consoles the PS2 is in the lead by quite a bit. With over 41 million sales in the US alone the PS2 is more than two times ahead of it’s nearest counterpart which is the DS. Look for the nearest console to it and you’ll get the 360 which has less than a quarter of its sales. However the PS2 will likely see a sharp decline in sales this year now that the Wii has taken off and is actually starting to get some games. The PS3 might actually beat it in sales next year, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.
2007 Total Hardware Sales
- Nintendo DS - 8,500,000
- Wii - 6,290,000
- Xbox 360 - 4,620,000
- PlayStation 2 - 3,970,000
- PSP - 3,820,000
- PlayStation 3 - 2,560,000
Lifetime-To-Date Total Hardware Sales
- PlayStation 2 - 41,120,000
- Nintendo DS - 17,650,000
- PSP - 10,470,000
- Xbox 360 - 9,150,000
- Wii - 7,380,000
- PlayStation 3 - 3,250,000
It’s interesting to see that the Wii has already caught up to the Xbox 360 even though it’s only been out half the time and in low supply the entire time.
