Games of the year
According to a bunch of Game Critics, who all named their top 10’s and gave them a score between 5 and 30 and then added up all the points awarded to each game, Bioshock is the overall Game of the Year with the most nominations. It’s a pretty interesting top 10 actually:
1. BioShock 2. The Orange Box 3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 4. Rock Band 5. Super Mario Galaxy 6. Halo 3 7. Mass Effect 8. God of War II 9. Assassin’s Creed 10. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
All but two of these games I have played and I own four of them, I’ll probably be buying The Orange Box sometime as well. Rock Band I probably won’t be buying but I’ll definitely be playing at Tim’s over the summer.
If you break it down by platform then the Xbox 360 has 7 (Bioshock, The Orange Box, COD4, Rock Band, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Assassin’s Creed), the PS3 has 5 (The Orange Box, COD4, Rock Band, Assassins Creed, Uncharted) and the Wii has 1 (Super Mario Galaxy). However if you switch that to platform exclusives then the Xbox 360 has only 3 and the PS3 has only 1 which puts it in line with the Wii. The poor PC has only 1 overall (COD4) and no exclusives.
It’s kind of ironic isn’t it that the Wii only one game in the Top 10 Game of the Year awards and yet is the highest selling console of the year. Will it have more next year? I highly doubt it. It’s aimed at the casual market, where there’s no market for space operas and shooters.
Also, it’s interesting to note that these 10 games are perhaps the 10 prettiest games of the year as well as setting new standards in gameplay. Can the two ever really be seperated? I don’t think so, I think we need to be drawn in by the graphics before we can begin to appreciate anything else. I guess games really are evolving to become more like reality then, huh?
