I met Chris for coffee today (how mature are we?) and after we had a chat he ‘modded’ my PSP with custom firmware so I can play downloaded games.
I tried it out with a couple games and it seems to all be working fine, though Patapon won’t work till I get 3.90 so I’m meeting him again on Monday or Tuesday after he’s had college.
As well as PSP games I can also do PSOne games so I’m kind of intrigued to download some of the old Final Fantasy games to see what all the fuss is about.
They re-released prettier versions of one & two for the PSP so I can download those versions but then I think three through nine were on the PS1 so I’m gonna have a search around for them.

It’s all working fine then? I didn’t doubt it, honest
You’re nearly right about the FF games, you can basically play everything from 1 to 9 on the PSP, except for 3 (which was strictly Japan-only until the recent DS remake). The are the PSP remakes of 1 and 2, as well as a PS1 thing called FF Origins with both of them (the PSP versions are better though, so stick with those). 4, 5 and 6 came out in various combinations/collections on PS1, depending which region you’re in (you could also just get a SNES emulator on the PSP and play them that way, which would avoid loading times). 7, 8 and 9 were all PS1 games anyway so you can play those fine on the PSP, same with FF Tactics which is really different to all the rest (I loved it, but it’s a bit of a “marmite” kinda game). Oh, and to mess with your head even more, FF4 and FF6 were originally released in the USA as FF2 and FF3 respectively (so watch for that if you decide to go the SNES emulation route)
Reading it back, that’s even more confusing than when I tried to explain it in person. Oh well!
