So Doctor Who season four finished on Saturday with an extended, companion filled episode that had the potential to be the best episode of the season. Was it?

In some ways it was. Donna was turned into part timelord and became really smart and pwnd the Daleks. But then she had her memory wiped and the Doctor dumped her back at home. Donna was an excellent companion, Catherine Tate really earned my kudos as an actress for the performance, and I see her getting some nods when it comes to award time. For her to be ditched after only one season seems a bad choice in my opinion. The series needs a stable companion after the change from Rose to Martha to Donna. Whether it was Catherine Tate leaving to do something else or whether she just wasn’t asked back I don’t know but it makes me sad.

After the excellence of episode 12 ending in the shock regeneration, after the Doctor was shock by a Dalek, I couldn’t wait for episode 13. It just didn’t live up to my expectations. It was too busy with all the companions and there were distracting side stories (did anyone ever give a fuck about the Osterhagen key? No, we all just wanted to see Martha die) and then the Daleks were destroyed with what seems like no effort at all and it was time for the poignant farewells to all the companions. Which with there being so many of them took up most of the episode.

The betrayal of the Daleks by Dalek Khan was a shock tho, and the destruction of the Daleks by the second Doctor seemed a bit rash and violent for a Saturday night show. It seemed more suited to Torchwood’s dark themes.

Oh and speaking of Torchwood, if Martha and Mickey replace Tosh and Owen I certainly won’t be watching. Did the BBC sign Freema on for many years or something? It seems like they’re bringing her back constantly simply because they have to. The fans never liked her so I don’t see any other reason than contractual obligation.

Season Four topped season three on so many levels (the only good thing to come out of season three was Blink) and while I’m excited to watch the Christmas Special, it’s only because I can watch it live with Tim since he’ll be at mine. I’m more excited for 2010 (tho the tv specials do have potential, I just won’t hold my breath) when the Moff takes over.
